ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL: The wheelchair-friendly Prague CoolPass city cruise

This winter, Paul, Dan, Coz and I took the flight from a drizzly Birmingham to a colder climb – Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic.

Prague is a majestic city and we discovered the best way to sightsee was the Prague CoolPass cruise along the Vltava River which gives panoramic views of the sights as well as passing under the famous Charles Bridge.

Our cruise is on the final day of the three-night trip and the perfect tonic to nights on the cobbled street drinking the delectable local beers Prague is famed for.

Lasting an hour, we’ve enough time on the boat to relax as we float along Vltava and take in the Prague Parliament and local hospital (where I nearly ended up the previous night after too much Jagermeister shots!)

There are tables and waiter service, and we each order our favourite coffees – three lattes and an espresso – as well as sharing chocolate cake.

Here at our cruise table for four we found a few moments to capture our trip on camera. Here I was able to get my Polaroid Instamax out and our phones for a group shot.

The cobbled streets we stayed around in the Old Town of Prague were okay for the trip but only because Dan was strong enough to push the manual chair across them– I wouldn’t have managed as well. If we return, it’ll be to the New Town area which is flatter.

However our cruise was surprisingly accessible: there was a slope from the streets to the river and a ramp and wide entrance to the boat.

Prague makes for a magical city break during off-peak months when it’s quieter. Be sure to ‘czech-out’ the Prague CoolPass for special offers and discounts and definitely sightsee on a cruise.

The river Vltava is relaxing. The local beer is great. But the jagermeister shots are optional.
