ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL – Aberlady in Scotland

By Erica Crompton

My partner Paul, a wheelchair user, and I have just returned from a trip where we spent a day out in Aberlady, on the Scottish coast. We found Craigielaw Golf Course hotel very accessible (we paid £72 for one night for two with a Scottish breakfast included) and it even boasts its own wheelchair buggy for accessible golf. We spent the day seabird spotting at the Scottish Seabird Centre (£5 entry fee each) which has it’s own lift and where volunteers are super informative. We then took our new-found bird knowledge to Aberlady Bay (free to park!) to watch the sun set and see what birds we could spot (Guillemots, Eiders and Oystercatchers). We drove here along the Edinburgh scenic route from Staffordshire, stopping for a beef baguette in the Lake District and then heading through Peebles, in Paul’s new motability car, a Dacia Jogger which is the only motability car that fits a hoist and Paul’s electric power chair in. We celebrated Burns night at the Craigelaw with neeps, tatties and haggis, too! We hear the coastal resort is big news for US golfers! Does an accessible holiday in Scotland maybe interest you too?
