We pull-up to Taghazout’s Hilton Hotel in a large, white people carrier and are greeted with a sprawling foyer in sandy-hued marble, thoughtful designer lighting and friendly smiles at reception. Nothing is too much to ask of staff here at the 5-star resort. In fact, we came to view the locals as one of the main reasons we’d visit Morocco again.
Flanked by the warm staff, the reception area opens out to outside seating, all cushions and plush sofas. And then there are the teal-coloured pools including a heated pool and a children’s pool. It feels like a pinch-me moment that our little magazine has hit the big time as staff glide from room to room to bring us chilled water and a silver ashtray.
The accessible room we’re booked in is large with enough room for Paul to work his manual wheelchair. The only drawback is that there’s no chair for Paul in the roll-in shower. We discuss this with staff and within the hour Paul has one – he’s washed and dressed even sooner so we can roll-out the resort onto the wide, tarmac pavement that hugs the beach, so we can watch the tangerine sunset of the Taghazout fishing village that offsets the hotel to the right.
It was only on our final day that the rain tumbled down – our last-but-one day was spent by the pool, tanning. We took a buffet breakfast each morning of beef sausages and pancakes with honey and peanut sauce from a vast array of Moroccan cuisine (the cakes are especially dreamy).
We had hoped from pictures of the resort we’d seen that the pool might be accessible, but the hand railings weren’t just-so that Paul could access the pool. So, Paul used the showers to refresh instead.
Evenings here were spent in the Mediterranean seafront restaurant – it was Ramadam and the Moroccan one was closed. We recommend the fishing boat seafood platter and seafood Paella at the Mediterranean restaurant. It was busy enough off-peak to have a vibrant atmosphere, but not so busy we had to shout to hear ourselves.
In all, the hotel comes recommended by Hopezine as one made accessible by the friendly staff and spacious architecture which begins in the wide and flatly-surfaced entrance and ends at he hotel’s rear, along the beach-front, and under that tangerine Taghazout sun.
