Accessible travel at Mollett’s Farm, Suffolk

By Erica Crompton
We stayed in a development that, like many contributors in this month’s
issue, had a second chance. At Mollett’s Farm in Saxmundham, Suffolk,
a former waste land on the farm has been transformed into a series of
accessible accommodations. I went along with our resident wheelchair
user and Accessibility Consultant, Paul Nicholls. On entering we found a
disabled parking spot near to our studio with plenty of space to pull-out
a chair. A short distance away was ‘Dunwich’ a stables studio built from
scratch and with some natty accessible features like a double bed with
room for a hoist underneath and wetroom with two adjacent sinks.

All the rooms at Mollett’s Farm are individually designed like this, with
special attention to those with disabilities without compromising on style
or comfort – making the experience inclusive. Our studio also had its own
patio area for us to take in a sunset and then stargaze. We utilised our
studio here to explore Suffolk and visited a lovely pebble beach at
Aldeburgh and even bought a disabled lobster with just one claw at Snape
Maltings Farmers Market! On the second day Paul took a complimentary
tramper vehicle around an accessible walk at Dunwich Heath, a beautiful
nature reserve along the coast and our studio’s namesake. That night we
met 90s pop sensation, Halo James, for drinks at the Greyhound Inn,
in nearby Ipswich. And the following day was a chilled one. On returning
for our third day out, we took a drink with Mollett’s Farm owner Sasha
on our terrace. We enjoyed our stay very much and were ideally placed to
explore, eat and drink around the Suffolk Heritage Coast.
