I didn’t realise just how much I needed a proper break until I arrived at the Park Head Hotel in Bishop Auckland. Life has been full-on lately—work, family, the usual juggling act—and stepping through those doors felt like letting out a breath I’d been holding for months. The place has a down to earth charm that instantly puts you at ease. Nothing pretentious, nothing over the top, just honest comfort and people who seem to genuinely care whether you’re having a good stay.
My room was spotless and cosy, with everything laid out in a way that made settling in effortless. I’m not someone who needs fancy extras; I just want things to work and to feel looked after, and that’s exactly what I got. After dropping my bags, I headed straight to the restaurant, where I treated myself to a proper steak. And I mean proper. Juicy, cooked exactly how I asked, and full of flavour without any unnecessary fuss. It reminded me of the kind of hearty meals I grew up with: simple, satisfying, and done right.
The next day, I took a tour of Auckland Castle, which is only a short trip from the hotel. I’d heard it was beautiful, but seeing it in person was something else. The history, the architecture, the stories behind every room. It all felt rich and meaningful, like stepping into another world for a while. The tour was well organised and easy to follow, and I never felt rushed. It was the kind of experience that stays with you, especially when you don’t often get the chance to slow down and soak in something so special.
By the time I checked out, I felt lighter, calmer, and genuinely grateful. Park Head Hotel gave me exactly what I’d been craving: a break that didn’t try to be fancy, just thoughtful, warm, and real. I’d go back without hesitation, steak and castle included.
