Prison was the beginning, the lowest of the lows,
I remember telling my mum, the only thing worse was death,
It’s difficult to think of a punishment so pointless,
Yet, an experience that makes your life a mess,
My first day in prison was hard, I felt so deeply lost,
When you think about crime, you never think of the cost,
The tears from your loved ones, the pain to your self,
It’s like for a moment, your life is on a shelf,
My life was on pause, for the sentence there was no remorse,
I just wanted to get back on the right course,
What was right? What was wrong?
Why did the judge decide to give me so long?
I wasn’t a bad person, I was a lost kid,
Weed doesn’t kill, it was the only thing I allegedly did,
I remember what my teacher said, Prison was the best worse thing,
I learnt about the sorrow, the loss of freedom is a sting,
Prisons could be a place of hope, but instead they are despair,
Most of the people, they wouldn’t be there if life was fair,
Hurt people, hurt people, lost people chase fear,
Imagine, if you didn’t know what to hold dear?
I wish that everyone cared, about those in our prison walls,
Society would have chance, to save so many lost souls,
People are people, neither good nor bad,
In prison, we just guarantee that we’ll make people sad,
Everyone is someone’s child, sometimes they cause pain,
Only if we are willing to teach them, will they learn to refrain,
Prison made me a teacher, a monk and gave me my fate,
It was the School of Life, at least I had a release date,
Over time, I learnt to find meaning in my sentence length,
To feel wronged and to let go, this requires a deep strength,
If you’re still inside, I beg you to engage,
Just learn to let go, there’s no use in the rage,
You are a human, infinite potential locked in flesh,
Learn to live in a way, to be healthy and fresh,
Your life has value and you can achieve anything,
Your mind must be pure, you must begin dancing,
Each person in prison, can become a beacon of hope,
The first step is to get off the dope,
Then learn everyday, read everything, become a master,
Once you are released, you will realise why, the real mission is to avoid disaster.
