“Why mental health support shouldn’t be a luxury” By Jessica Farazmand

For many people, accessing therapy can feel out of reach due to financial barriers, lengthy waiting lists or uncertainty about where to turn for help.

We often hear conversations about the importance of looking after our mental health, but for some individuals and families, the cost of private therapy can make accessing support feel impossible. This can result in people waiting until they reach crisis point before seeking help, often when earlier intervention may have prevented difficulties from escalating.

Affordable therapy helps bridge that gap.

By providing lower-cost counselling options, more people can access support at the point they need it, rather than months or years later. This early intervention can have a significant impact on emotional wellbeing, relationships, confidence, work, education and overall quality of life.

Affordable counselling is particularly important for those facing additional challenges, including young people, families, carers, students, individuals on lower incomes and those navigating significant life changes. Mental health difficulties do not discriminate, and access to support should not be determined solely by a person’s financial circumstances.

One of the often-overlooked benefits of affordable therapy is the sense of empowerment it can give clients. When therapy is financially accessible, individuals are able to make decisions based on their needs rather than their budget. Instead of feeling pressured to fit their journey into a set number of sessions, clients can access the amount of support that feels right for them. Some people may only need a handful of sessions to work through a specific issue, whilst others may benefit from longer-term support. Affordable, open-ended therapy allows the therapeutic process to be guided by the client’s goals and progress, helping them feel more in control of their own wellbeing and recovery.

The benefits extend beyond the individual receiving therapy. When people feel better supported, they are often better able to engage with their families, workplaces and communities. Children benefit when parents have access to emotional support. Relationships can improve when individuals have space to explore their thoughts and feelings. Communities become stronger when people feel connected and able to seek help without fear of judgement or financial hardship.

Affordable therapy also helps reduce stigma. When counselling becomes more accessible and visible within communities, conversations around mental health become more normalised. People are more likely to reach out for support when they know it is available, approachable and within their means.

As mental health challenges continue to rise across the UK, there is an increasing need for services that are both accessible and sustainable. Affordable counselling plays a vital role in ensuring that support is available to a wider range of people, helping individuals access help earlier and empowering them to make positive changes in their lives.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to be heard, understood and supported. Affordable therapy is not simply about reducing costs; it is about creating opportunities for people to access the help they need and ensuring that mental health support is available to all, not just those who can afford it.
