ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL: I took my wheels around the Grand Hyatt, Rio

By Paul Nicholls

The Grand Hyatt Rio delivers an experience that blends luxury, accessibility, and the unmistakable charm of Rio’s beachfront lifestyle. Travelling as a wheelchair user, I found the hotel not only welcoming but thoughtfully designed – the entrance is step-free, the pool has rails and there’s even a wetroom on offer for disabled guests.

From the moment you arrive, the Hyatt’s spacious layout and step free access set this tone. Navigating the lobby, restaurants, and outdoor areas is effortless, and staff are consistently attentive without being intrusive. What truly stood out for me was the hotel’s unbeatable location. Directly across from the entrance lies a long, beautifully maintained seafront promenade that’s both wide and flat – perfect for rolling along the oceanfront with the breeze, the sound of waves, and the vibrant energy of Barra da Tijuca.

It became a daily highlight, offering both independence and a sense of connection to Rio even if my fiance Erica couldn’t push me for too far.

The pool area is another triumph. With accessible entry and plenty of space to move comfortably, it offers us on wheels the chance to swim, unwind, and soak in the tropical atmosphere. The water is warm, the views are stunning, and the whole setting feels like a private oasis.

But the moment that sealed the stay came on the final night. As we settled in at a local rodizio for the evening, we were serenaded by live piano music and a rendition of Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana”. It was playful, joyful, and perfectly suited to the spirit of Rio. A small touch, but one that made the night unforgettable.

Accessible, fun, and full of heart, the Grand Hyatt Rio proved to be a place where thoughtful design meets genuine hospitality. For wheelchair users seeking comfort without compromise, and for anyone wanting a memorable Rio escape, it’s a standout choice.
