ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL: The Sheraton Grand, Rio

By Erica Crompton

Nestled on the fringes of the tropical Leblon beaches, between a favela, the mountains and the south Atlantic sea, is the Sheraton hotel. A tall, white statue of luxury piled on luxury, where we were fortunate to stay for our engagement trip to Brazil this spring.

Each room has a balcony, which we enjoyed. The décor is warm woods and mahogany and accessibility is always catered for, too.

What we enjoyed most on our 24th floor room, was the view: we we surrounded by nature and life, each slight of my neck, my eyes would take in something new.

We ate hearty buffet breakfasts sat across from the ocean and the Club Access room was made for us – complimentary cocktails flowed between 7pm and 9pm and the staff knew how to mix a Caipirinha.

On our second day here we were keen to try a local Brazilian dish, so headed to the pool-side steak house for a rodizio (an all-you-can-eat Brazilian steak buffet). Oh my! These steaks are grilled to perfection and the salad buffets are lush. We had to take a lay-down by the pool afterwards, to let our lunch settle.

By night is the best time to gaze out at the Copacabana beach, a 10 minute drive away, all bright lights and bustle.

Paul’s highlight to our stay are the views too. And the happy hour Caipirinhas – the perfect way to watch Rio fly by as the sun set, ready for a good night’s rest on those comfortable beds.
